Transitional kindergarten or TK is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program that uses a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate. Pursuant to law, (EC 48000[c]), children are eligible for transitional kindergarten if they will have their fifth birthday on or after Sept. 2 through Dec 2 of that same school year.
For the 2019-2020 school year, children must have their fifth birthday on or after September 2, 2019 through and including December 2, 2019.
The mission of Transitional Kindergarten is to be a bridge between preschool and kindergarten. As the first year of a two-year kindergarten program, TK introduces students to rich academic experiences to better prepare them for kindergarten. TK provides a modified, developmentally appropriate curriculum in a play-based learning setting. Throughout the year, students experience a language-rich environment that emphasizes inclusion and social-emotional growth.
